Toxic Gas Leak Kills Eight Workers at Bangladesh Shipbreaking Yard
A toxic gas leak at a shipbreaking yard in Bangladesh's Chittagong has killed eight workers and left five others missing, police said.
The incident occurred on August 14, 2026, at Ferdous Steel Shipbreaking Yard and Recycling Factory. The yard had acquired a vessel previously used to transport liquefied natural gas, which was supposed to be free of any gas before cutting began.
However, fire service official Towfiqul Islam Bhuiyan said that safety procedures appeared to have been flouted. 'The yard authorities did not follow the instructions. Workers who were exposed to the gas died, while those who were farther away survived,' he told AFP.
A committee has been formed to investigate the incident, and the authorities have ordered an audit of the shipbreaking yard.
