Trading Gold Online through CFDs: Understanding the Mechanics of XAUUSD Positions

Trading gold online can be done through Contracts for Difference (CFDs) under the symbol XAUUSD, which tracks the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. The smallest position at EBC is 0.01 lots, equivalent to one ounce, with a $1.00 move in the gold price worth $100 per lot and $1.00 at the minimum size.

The exposure per ounce is identical whether trading long or short, and nothing is stored, insured, or sold back at a dealer's discount. The position still carries the full value of every ounce rather than the cash posted against it.

There are three direct position-level costs: the spread, commission on Professional accounts, and overnight financing when a position crosses rollover. A demo account uses the same instrument and pricing as live data, with nothing at stake.
