Trans Mountain Pipeline Generates Billions as Canada Seeks to Secure Its Energy Future
Canada's Trans Mountain pipeline has been operating at near full capacity since its expansion in May 2024, producing C$808 million in revenue and C$138 million in net income in the second quarter of 2026.
The pipeline's record performance has helped reduce the Western Canadian Select discount to West Texas Intermediate by an average of US$18.70 per barrel, generating approximately C$13 billion in additional Canadian oil revenue during the expansion's first year.
A new study by Resource Works estimates that the proposed Mainline Optimization Project (MOP) would add roughly 210,000 barrels a day to the system and generate C$33.5 billion in Canadian income over 25 years, discounted to today.
The MOP would make more efficient use of the corridor already built, extracting another large increment of value from it.
