Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project Set to Revolutionize Europe's Energy Landscape
The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project is a 4,128-kilometer-long energy route that will stretch from Nigeria through Niger and Algeria to the Mediterranean Sea.
The pipeline will connect the existing gas network near Aoulef in southwest Algeria to the Mediterranean export terminals and supply Europe with up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
Algeria's state-owned oil and gas company Sonatrach is managing the project, which was first conceptualized in the 1970s but put on hold due to security and financing issues. It has been revived due to growing European demand for alternatives to Russian and Middle Eastern gas supplies.
The TSGP will cement Algeria's status as a major gas supplier and transit hub between West Africa and the Mediterranean, while also providing Nigeria and Niger with access to the European market via an overland route.
