Transgaz Eyes Stake in US LNG Terminal Developer Amid Energy Diversification Push
Transgaz, Romania's national natural gas transmission system operator, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Argent LNG, a US company developing an LNG export terminal in Louisiana. The MoU establishes a non-binding framework for the parties to explore and negotiate the terms of Transgaz's potential equity investment in Argent LNG.
The primary objectives of this investment are to enable the transit of U.S. LNG through Romania to other European countries, while diversifying Romania's natural gas supply sources. This move is part of Romania's strategy to reduce dependence on Russian gas and strengthen energy security in the region.
Argent LNG is developing one of the largest LNG export terminals in the US at Port Fourchon, Louisiana, with a planned capacity of 25 million metric tons per year and a first cargo targeted for 2030. The investment's success will support the development of this infrastructure project and contribute to Romania's energy diversification efforts.
