Transporters' Strike Pushes Up Kitchen Item Prices in Pakistan

A nationwide strike by transporters has led to an increase in prices of essential kitchen items in Pakistan. According to a survey conducted by Business Recorder, the prices of edible items have risen due to the disruption in supply caused by damaged road networks following monsoon rains. The survey found that chicken prices increased by Rs900 per 40 kg, from Rs12,500 to Rs13,400 in the wholesale market, while egg prices rose from Rs7,400 to Rs7,650 per carton.

Meat prices remained stable, but sugar prices went up from Rs6,800 to Rs6,900 per 50 kg bag. Wheat flour price decreased slightly from Rs2,200 to Rs2,190 per 15 kg bag in the wholesale market. The prices of various varieties of rice remained stable, with top-quality basmati rice available at Rs1,4000 per 40kg bag.

The prices of LPG increased by Rs12.89 per kg, but marketing companies and retailers are selling it at more than double the official price. The phenomenon reflects that consumers are overcharged by Rs126-146 per kg and Rs1,690-2,490 per domestic cylinder of 15 kg.
