Treasury Department Takes Lead in Trump Administration's Iran Sanctions Campaign
The Trump administration has shifted its Iran war strategy from the Pentagon to the Treasury Department, relying on economic sanctions to achieve what military strikes have not. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is leading 'Operation Economic Fury,' a financial campaign aimed at isolating Iran economically.
The initiative targets not only Iranian entities but also foreign financial institutions in China, Hong Kong, the UAE, and Oman that facilitate transactions with Tehran. Washington is threatening penalties for non-compliance, forcing banks to choose between doing business with the US or with Iran.
Bessent's approach mirrors a pattern used during the Obama-era sanctions that led to the 2015 nuclear deal. The current administration's strategy builds on groundwork laid after its withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2020 and was renewed through National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 in February 2025.
Iran's economy is already struggling with inflation and fuel shortages, despite being one of the world's largest oil producers. The success of Operation Economic Fury depends on Washington's ability to enforce its threats and disrupt Iran's oil supply chains.
