Trump Admin Eyes Venezuelan Oil Expansion Amid Rising Gas Prices
President Trump met with oil industry leaders at the White House to discuss ways to boost US oil production and lower rising gas prices. The national average price of gasoline has remained above $4 per gallon, prompting the administration to look for solutions.
The meeting focused on expanding domestic refining capacity and increasing oil output from Venezuela, where Chevron plans to expand its operations. Chevron is the only major American producer with a significant presence in the country, holding approximately 303 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves, the largest in the world.
However, much of this heavy or extra-heavy crude requires more complex refining, which can be a challenge for US refineries. Despite this, Chevron's expansion is part of the administration's broader push to increase Venezuelan oil production and meet the growing demand for gasoline and other petroleum products.
The arrangement has sparked controversy due to concerns about the deal's legality and durability. A U.S. official stated that NABEP was vetted and no U.S. laws were violated, but critics may question the involvement of Betancourt, who faces money-laundering investigations in several countries.
