Trump Beef Plan Sparks Market Volatility Amid Cattle Futures Uptrend

Instruments
Wheat Corn
Share

Cattle futures initially rose on Monday but turned mixed, while hog prices traded erratically. Corn and wheat prices increased, but soybeans declined.

The bullish USDA Cattle on Feed Report was released after the close, contributing to the initial rise in cattle futures. Brad Kooima of Kooima Kooima Varilek noted that placements were 11% below last year's levels, a bullish surprise for him and the trade. However, he attributed this decline to higher corn prices and extreme heat, leading to increased cattle death loss.

Kooima also mentioned that the combination of longer feeding periods and an increasing number of beef on dairy cattle being fed longer than traditional English breeds is contributing to the record-low placements.
