Trump Dials Back Iran Conflict with New Negotiation Talks
US President Donald Trump announced new negotiations with Iran on Monday after deciding to hold off on striking the country in pursuit of a deal.
The conflict, which has been ongoing for six months, is centered around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies. The US and its allies have accused Iran of seeking to disrupt oil shipments through the waterway.
Trump said that the new talks would cover the denuclearization of Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian lawmakers confirmed that mediators were trying to revive a previous agreement between the two countries, which included provisions on the waterway's usage.
The US President had previously threatened to hit Iran 'very hard' in response to what he called aggressive behavior by Tehran. However, he decided to pull back from this threat after being asked by Iran and its allies Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar to hold off on strikes.
