Trump Emergency Permitting Process Fuels Plaquemines LNG Expansion
A liquefied natural gas terminal near New Orleans is seeking a massive expansion under a 'national energy emergency' permitting process. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted Plaquemines LNG, located on the Mississippi River between Myrtle Grove and Port Sulphur, fast-tracked permitting in less than two years after opening.
The expansion is valued at multi-billions of dollars and may weaken protections for surrounding wetlands and waterways. President Donald Trump declared a 'national energy emergency' last year, which allowed the terminal to bypass environmental review and obtain fast-tracked permitting.
