Trump Expedites Environmental Review for Alaska Oil Pipeline
The Trump administration has expedited the environmental review process for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), which would reauthorize the project and ensure oil production in Alaska for another 30 years. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is only accepting public comment on the project for 15 days, significantly shorter than the usual 30 to 60-day period.
The expedited review process will result in an environmental assessment, a less-comprehensive evaluation than the previous full environmental impact statement that considered oil spill risks and potential damages to permafrost. This move has been criticized by watchdog groups, who believe the Trump administration is seeking an early renewal to avoid considering mounting economic and ecological concerns.
Critics point out that the BLM was not scheduled to renew the project until 2034. The two pipeline owners, ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil, have contributed $1 million each to President Trump's inaugural fund.
