Trump Eyes Iran Oil Grab
US President Donald Trump has suggested that the country could remain engaged in Iran and retain control of its oil reserves, drawing parallels with a deal struck in Venezuela. Speaking at the Irish Open golf championship during his trip to Ireland, Trump stated that the US could 'stay and keep the oil like Venezuela'.
In August, the US announced a deal to take control of a fifth of Venezuela's vast oil reserves, which has generated significant revenue for the country. According to Trump, this revenue has 'paid for the war many times.' He added that Iran was 'calling constantly' for peace talks, although Tehran has dismissed past assertions of such efforts.
Trump also reiterated his expectation that the Iran war would end this year, possibly after the US midterm elections in November. He predicted that gasoline prices would 'drop like a rock' once the conflict is resolved, amid turmoil in the Middle East and rising oil prices following new strikes on Saudi Arabian infrastructure and Gulf shipping.
