Trump Eyes Keystone XL Revival Amid Ongoing Trade Talks
US President Donald Trump has hinted at reviving the Keystone XL oil pipeline project in a pair of posts on Truth Social. The project, which was first proposed in 2008, aimed to transport 830,000 barrels of crude oil per day from Canada's Alberta tar sands to refineries in the US. However, former President Joe Biden paused the project in 2021 by revoking a permit needed for the pipeline.
The Keystone XL pipeline has been a contentious issue due to concerns over potential oil spills and its impact on Native American land and water safety. Trump praised the project in his Truth Social posts, saying it was 'long ago killed' by Biden but may now be 'awoken from the grave.' He also mentioned that he had paused tariffs on Canadian imports for three days as part of a deal between the two countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that substantial progress had been made on a trade deal with the US and that the tariff pause was in place. However, Trump's comments about reviving the Keystone XL pipeline have sparked renewed debate over the project's viability and potential environmental impact.
