US President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video of Kharg Island being 'blown to smithereens' on his Truth Social account. The island is a crucial hub for Iran's oil export infrastructure, handling around 90% of the country's crude oil exports before the war. This makes it one of Tehran's most important economic assets.
The video, which lasts only 10 seconds, shows explosions engulfing the strategic Iranian oil hub. Kharg Island is particularly significant due to its deep-water facilities, allowing large tankers to load Iranian crude, while much of Iran's other coastline is too shallow for such vessels.
It's worth noting that Kharg has been largely inactive under the US blockade, with The Financial Times reporting earlier this month that the island's loading facilities had been idle since late July. Trump has previously threatened to seize the island.
