Trump Predicts Decline in Strait of Hormuz's Global Energy Significance
US President Donald Trump has made a surprising statement about the Strait of Hormuz, claiming that it will become less important in global energy trade. He believes that the current situation in the Middle East is forcing energy buyers to seek alternative routes.
According to Trump, the construction of pipelines is on the rise, with a record number being built. This trend suggests that the Strait of Hormuz's role as a critical artery for global energy supply chains may be diminishing.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman through which approximately 20% of global oil supplies and around 25% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports pass. Trump added that the US has increased its own hydrocarbon exports as an alternative to relying on the strait.
The development comes after reports in July that the US was negotiating the construction of a pipeline from Iraq to Syria, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz altogether.
