US President Donald Trump has suggested that Iran is on the verge of collapse and will eventually seek an end to the ongoing war, which has been in its seventh month. In a recent statement, Trump said that Iran's government is desperate to affect the outcome of the upcoming midterm elections in November by hurting Republican prospects.
The conflict between the US and Iran has driven up energy prices, with the global benchmark oil price topping $100 a barrel for the first time since July. The national average for gasoline in the US climbed 7.3 cents to $4.22 a gallon on Wednesday, while diesel reached a record $5.94 a gallon.
Trump has downplayed the severity of the conflict, with Vice President J.D. Vance saying last week that he would not call the recent flare-up 'a war.' However, Trump has maintained that Americans understand the need to continue the war until Iran eliminates the possibility of obtaining a nuclear weapon.
