Trump Renews Claim on Strait of Hormuz, Tensions with Iran Escalate
US President Donald Trump has reignited a long-standing claim about the Strait of Hormuz. On August 23, he shared a map on Truth Social that appears to show the strategic waterway as new American territory.
This is not the first time Trump has published such a map; he previously shared it on August 18. The president initially floated the idea of treating the strait as US land at a rally in New York on August 15, stating that after defeating Iran, he would soon announce the strait as American territory.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital shipping lanes, carrying about one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports. While Iran claims control over the strait, Trump maintains that the United States fully controls the passage.
