Trump Seeks Control of Kharg Island, but Experts Warn of Risks for US Troops

US President Donald Trump has expressed his preference to seize Kharg Island, Iran's oil infrastructure hub. The island, located in the northern end of the Gulf, is crucial for Iran's energy trade and handles around 90% of its oil exports. Trump said that taking the island would be his preferred option, but noted 'I don't know that America has the stomach for it.'

The US military could potentially seize Kharg Island quickly, but experts warn that this move could prolong rather than shorten the war. Analysts point out that US troops would be exposed to missile and drone attacks, including camera-wielding drones that have been used by millions in Ukraine.

Former commander of the US Central Command Joseph Votel also expressed concerns about taking the island, stating that only 800-1,000 troops would be needed but they would require logistical backup, which would also need protection. He doubted that seizing the island would provide any particular tactical advantage and called it an 'odd' thing to do.
