Trump Set to Urge Ireland to Import US Liquefied Natural Gas
US President Donald Trump is expected to press Ireland to buy liquefied natural gas from the United States during his visit this weekend. According to official contacts between the two sides, Trump will raise the issue with Taoiseach Micheál Martin in a brief bilateral meeting at Farmleigh House in Dublin on Saturday morning.
The Government has been building an LNG terminal in the Shannon estuary and is expected to sign off on it. Trump previously pressed Martin on LNG during his St Patrick's Day visit to Washington in March, suggesting it was a way for Ireland to reduce its trade imbalance with the US.
Eric Trump, the President's son, spoke with RTÉ from the Doonbeg resort and said he expected the meeting between his father and President Catherine Connolly at Áras an Uachtaráin to 'go exceptionally well', citing his father's love for Ireland.
