Trump Signs Order for New Pipeline Project Reviving Keystone XL Route

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an order authorizing Bridger Pipeline to build a proposed 1,038-kilometre pipeline from Canada to Wyoming, reviving part of the cancelled Keystone XL project.

The new proposal would transport approximately 550,000 barrels of Canadian crude per day to the U.S., increasing Canada's exports by more than 12% if it goes ahead. Bridger Pipeline is partnering with South Bow, a Canadian pipeline company that was created in 2024 after TC Energy spun off its oil pipeline business.

James Coleman, an energy law professor at the University of Minnesota, believes there are 'market realities' that make this project sensible, citing continued increases in oil production in Canada and threats to waterborne traffic. However, he also warns that there could be legal challenges similar to those faced by Keystone XL.
