Trump Tells Americans to Pay More for Gas Amid Strait of Hormuz Crisis
The Strait of Hormuz crisis has escalated tensions in the Middle East and is putting pressure on the global energy supply chain. According to US Energy Information Administration, oil shipments through the strait averaged 20.9 million barrels per day during the first half of 2025, accounting for about 20% of world petroleum liquids consumption.
In response to this crisis, US President Donald Trump has urged Americans to pay a 'little bit more' for gas, citing the need to ensure that Iran does not gain access to nuclear weapons. The average cost of gas in the United States is currently $4.08 per gallon, up 29% from last year.
Talks between the US and Iran have stalled, with no sign of a ceasefire in sight. Iran's deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the Strait will be opened and closed only under its command, while Iranian officials argue that meeting certain conditions is necessary for navigation to return to normal.
