Trump Touts Venezuelan Oil Deal and Warns Canada of Tariff Consequences
US President Donald Trump announced that oil from a deal with Venezuela will be used to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which has been depleted due to global supply disruptions and high fuel prices. The reserve held about 290 million barrels as of August 21, near a 44-year low.
The agreement aims to revive Venezuela's battered oil industry, but significant investment and infrastructure work will be needed before production can rise substantially. Trump described the Venezuelan oil as a 'gift from Venezuela to the people of the United States'.
Trump also stated that Canadian businesses are rapidly relocating to the US due to trade hostilities between the two neighboring nations. He claimed that Canada has been 'ripping us off for years' and vowed to fundamentally alter the economic relationship.
