The Trump administration is intensifying economic pressure on Iran as part of its strategy to force Tehran to abandon its nuclear ambitions and open the Strait of Hormuz to oil shipping.

President Donald Trump described the planned campaign as an 'economic D-Day,' despite Iran's long history of surviving severe American sanctions.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington could impose secondary sanctions on countries and companies that continue doing business with Iran, including China and India, major purchasers of Iranian crude.

Richard Goldberg, who helped develop pressure against Iran during Trump's first administration, argued that recent U.S. attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, this year's war, and the naval blockade of Iranian ports have created circumstances that could be far more damaging to Tehran than previous sanctions campaigns.
