US President Donald Trump has announced an 'economic D-Day' aimed at choking off Iran's foreign trade and financial networks, marking a significant escalation in his administration's campaign against Tehran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that countries providing Iran with economic support through oil purchases, financial institutions, cash transfers, or shipping registries could face 'TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.'

The new strategy involves the broadest use yet of US secondary sanctions against countries, banks, companies, and shipping firms that continue to do business with Iran. This move is expected to target third-country networks through which Iran has continued to sell oil and obtain goods despite decades of sanctions.

Bessent described the new strategy as a 'one-two punch,' combining a naval blockade with the toughest sanctions in history. The aim is to 'collapse this regime' by isolating Iran and severing its economic lifelines.
