Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched attacks on two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, opening up a new front in Donald Trump's war and sending oil prices soaring above $100 per barrel for the first time in two months.

The US has been conducting airstrikes against Iranian targets for nearly two weeks, with President Trump warning of 'major military punishment' if Tehran continues to disrupt commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attacks on Wednesday night, saying they were a response to Saudi Arabia's blockade on their country and the kingdom's failure to abide by their embargo in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The US has accused Iran of violating a Memorandum of Understanding by attacking oil tankers passing through the Persian Gulf, and has been trying to cripple Tehran's ability to menace commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
