Trump's AI-Generated Video Sparks Concern Over Kharg Island Oil Hub
Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, has been thrust back into the spotlight after US President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video depicting the island being 'blown to smithereens.'
The island is a crucial oil export hub for Iran, handling about 90% of the country's crude exports before the war. However, recent US attacks targeted Larak Island, not Kharg.
Hamid Bovard, chief executive of the state-run National Iranian Oil Company, dismissed Trump's social media posts as 'laughable' and said conditions on the island remained calm.
The importance of Kharg Island cannot be overstated. Before the war, Iran produced over 3 million barrels of oil a day, with millions of barrels stored on the island. Any disruption to its infrastructure could affect global oil supplies and send energy prices higher.
