Trump's Economic Pressure on Iran Risks Escalating Global Confrontation
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced Operation Economic Outcast, an effort to cut Iran off from the global economy and threaten foreign governments, banks, and companies with sanctions for doing business with Tehran.
The strategy aims to increase pressure on Iran's already battered economy, which has been hit hard by years of sanctions, war, and a US naval blockade. Iranian officials acknowledge that oil exports and access to foreign currency have been severely constrained, leading to high inflation, currency depreciation, and worsening living standards for ordinary Iranians.
However, Iranian officials suggest that this strategy will only make it more difficult for the US to achieve its goals, as Iran will seek to negotiate from a position of 'power and dignity'. The country is banking on its ability to withstand economic pressure without capitulating or abandoning its core terms.
Tehran has threatened to tighten pressure on Hormuz, threaten infrastructure that enables alternative oil-export routes, and put greater pressure on US interests across the region. Meanwhile, China, a key player in this game, has ordered firms not to comply with US sanctions targeting Chinese buyers of Iranian oil.
