Trump's Economic Sanctions on Iran Trigger Conflict-of-Interest Questions

US President Donald Trump has intensified economic sanctions against Iran as part of his strategy to limit the country's financial power without resorting to military actions. According to Tim Constantine, a Washington Times writer, this approach involves using economic sanctions as a 'stranglehold' on Iran's economy and its ability to generate revenue.

The loss of Iran in wartime is estimated to range between $200 billion and $300 billion, while additional sanctions could exacerbate the country's economic crisis. This strategy aims to make the economic cost of war unsustainable for Iran.

However, Trump's own investments in oil and gas companies have raised questions about his involvement in this war and potential conflicts of interest. Financial disclosures revealed that Trump's accounts traded stocks of oil and gas companies throughout 2026, with approximately 3,600 transactions valued between $212 million and $695 million in the first quarter of the year.

The ExxonMobil transaction is particularly notable, as some of Trump's investment account sold $500,000 to $1 million worth of stock on April 7, when the closing price was $163.91. This sale occurred just after Trump declared a ceasefire in the Iran war.
