Trump's Energy Emergency Clears Path for Billion-Dollar LNG Expansion
The Plaquemines LNG export terminal in Louisiana has been granted fast-tracked permitting by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under a 'national energy emergency' declared by President Donald Trump last year.
The expansion, which is expected to cost billions of dollars, will allow the terminal to increase its liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity. This decision comes just over two years after the terminal opened in 2020.
The 'emergency' permitting process allows for a shortened environmental review period and may weaken protections for surrounding wetlands and waterways. While the exact cost of the expansion is not specified, it is described as being in the billions of dollars.
