Trump's Iran Talks Send Oil Prices Plummeting Globally
Oil prices dropped sharply after US President Donald Trump announced renewed talks with Iran, easing concerns over potential disruptions to regional supplies.
The decline in oil prices came after Trump called off plans for further military action against Iran and resumed diplomatic efforts. International markets responded positively to the prospect of reduced tensions, with traders betting that a diplomatic breakthrough could lower the risk of prolonged disruption to crude supplies from the region.
Brent crude, the global benchmark, fell by around 4.2 per cent to approximately $84 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined about 5pc to around $80 per barrel. Market analysts said investors were selling oil contracts amid expectations that improved relations between Washington and Tehran could reduce the possibility of further disruption to energy supplies.
Despite the decline in prices, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has not yet returned to normal. Iranian authorities are continuing discussions with Oman over the establishment of a temporary and secure maritime corridor. If an agreement is reached, ships could potentially resume limited passage through the route, further easing concerns over global oil and gas supplies.
