Trump's Talks with Iran Spark Oil Price Plunge
Talks between the US and Iran to end the Middle East war have sparked a sharp decline in oil prices. The Brent North Sea benchmark, which is used internationally, fell by 4.69% to $83.81 per barrel for September delivery. Its American equivalent, West Texas Intermediate, dropped by 4.67% to $80.72.
US President Donald Trump announced the fresh negotiations with Iran on Sunday, saying they would begin on Monday afternoon. The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, has been a key point of contention in the conflict. Iran said it was nearing an agreement with Oman for a new route through the strait.
The US and Israel launched airstrikes against Iranian targets last month, effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz and causing oil prices to fluctuate sharply. The waterway is crucial for global oil supplies, and any disruptions can have significant economic impacts.
