Trump's Venezuela Oil Deal: A Promising but Elusive Solution
President Donald Trump's recent deal with Venezuela has sparked hope for lower gas prices due to potential oil shortages caused by the ongoing Iran war. However, analysts warn that this benefit may not be immediate.
Patrick De Haan, a GasBuddy analyst, commented on social media platform X that while the idea of lower gas prices sounds promising, it will still take billions of investment to get the estimated 65 billion barrels of oil from Venezuela's vast proven reserves. He noted that this is different from actual oil reserves like the U.S.'s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
De Haan also pointed out that drilling and pumping these reserves will take a very long time, and changes to fuel prices won't happen overnight or even in months.
He further emphasized that constrained refining capacity is another issue. Even with additional oil, we lack enough global refining capacity to translate lower oil prices into lower fuel prices.
