Tyson Cattle Market Volatility Driven by Black Sea Conflict
The US cattle market is feeling the heat from rising demand and limited supply, leading to increased prices. Tyson Foods has announced it will shutter three beef packing facilities, including one in Illinois and another in Utah, citing overcapacity in the industry and financial pressure due to rising overhead costs.
Auction barn prices have remained elevated as demand exceeds supply overall, but cattle futures have been volatile due to swirling rumors causing liquidation. The USDA's recent reports showed a slight decrease in corn conditions and soybean yields, but harvested acres were increased for both crops, leading to higher total production estimates.
The Black Sea conflict has escalated, with all three Novorossiysk terminals halting operations, representing 75 percent of Russia's capacity. The sharp increase in wheat prices is being driven by the conflict and port blockages, which could continue to support prices unless a meaningful change occurs.
