U.S. Dominates Gold Reserves as Countries Diverge in Holdings
Gold remains an essential asset for central banks worldwide due to its value as a store of value and hedge against economic uncertainty. According to data from the World Gold Council, the U.S. holds the largest gold reserves with 8,133 tons, representing 82.4% of its total reserves.
Germany ranks second with 3,350 tons (82.2% share), followed by Italy with 2,452 tonnes (79.3% share) and France with 2,437 tons (79.9% share). China has the fourth-largest amount in gold reserves with 2,306 tons but only holds an 8.6% share due to its other reserve assets.
Switzerland rounds out the ranking with 1,040 tons in gold reserves and a 13.6% share.
