U.S.-Iran Tensions Send Crude Oil Prices Soaring to $101.21 per Barrel

International crude oil prices surged by more than 3% on Wednesday due to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran in the Persian Gulf region. Market concerns over potential disruptions to energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have reignited global supply risks. By the close of trading, Brent crude futures rose 3.4% to settle at $101.21 per barrel, marking the highest closing price since May 22.

The U.S.-Iran conflict has intensified abruptly, with American forces destroying five Iranian crude oil tankers in response to Iran's previous attempts to attack U.S. naval vessels. Although the U.S. had recently shifted its focus toward exerting economic pressure on Iran, Iran's continued attacks on commercial vessels ultimately led to the resumption of hostilities.

Rising oil prices have quickly transmitted to end-consumer markets, with U.S. gasoline prices reaching a historic high for the period on Monday during the Labor Day holiday, hitting $4.15 per gallon. Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at energy analytics firm GasBuddy, warned that U.S. diesel prices are expected to surpass the $6-per-gallon mark for the first time in the coming days.

Wall Street investment banks have issued more aggressive warnings regarding the market outlook, with Goldman Sachs predicting that oil prices could hit $120 per barrel if sustained attacks on tankers prevent exports from recovering as expected. Daan Struyven, co-head of global commodities research at Goldman Sachs, stated that recent tensions have increased the probability of a 'bull case' scenario, wherein sustained attacks on tankers drive oil prices even higher.
