U.S. Oil Reserves at 44-Year Lows Fuel Crude Price Rise

U.S. oil reserves have hit their lowest levels in about 44 years, causing crude prices to climb as the country becomes a prospective buyer of oil rather than just a consumer. The low reserve levels mean that refilling it will require competing for physical barrels alongside refiners and other buyers, adding a layer of demand to the market.

According to Fawad Razaqzada, Market Analyst at StoneX Media, the U.S. strategic oil reserves are currently at their lowest levels in about 44 years. The agreement between the United States and Venezuela will provide some relief, but barrels arriving under this deal are spoken for before they reach the open market, reducing the supply relief that the headline implies.

Venezuela's heavy sour crude is expensive and difficult to produce and refine, making it unlikely to ease the crude oil market on a timeline that matters to prices today. Razaqzada notes that any meaningful increase in output will take years rather than months, which markets are focused on 'barrels that could reach consumers today, not barrels that might become available in the future'.
