U.S. Stocks Fall on Consumer Slowdown Fears, Oil Prices Rebound
U.S. stocks fell across the board on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 0.20% to close at 53,732.41. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also declined, falling 0.17% and 0.28%, respectively.
The decline was driven by concerns over a slowdown in American consumer spending, with retail sales falling 0.6% in July from the previous month. This figure sharply undershot market expectations of a 0.1% increase.
The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index also fell this month, dropping to 51.0 from 55.2 in July. This was the first decline in three months and fell well below the forecasted 54.5.
Despite the decline in retail sales and consumer sentiment, oil prices rebounded more than 1% on Wednesday, driven by an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and rising tensions between the United States and Iran.
