U.S. Strikes Destroy Five Iranian Oil Tankers Amid Escalating Gulf Tensions
The U.S. military has targeted and destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for Tehran's attempts to attack American warships with ballistic missiles.
The strikes, carried out on Tuesday (the 8th), included four crude oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and one tanker near Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. Crew members were notified before the attacks and no casualties have been reported.
The move has significantly heightened the risk of ongoing disruption to Iranian crude exports and transportation, with international oil prices climbing in response. Brent crude futures briefly touched $99.50 per barrel on Tuesday, approaching the triple-digit threshold for the first time since July.
