UAE Blames Iran for ADNOC Vessel Attack in Hormuz Strait
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has accused Iran of attacking a vessel belonging to state-owned oil giant ADNOC in the Hormuz strait, which is a vital shipping route for global energy supplies. The incident occurred on August 14 and no injuries were reported.
The UAE's foreign ministry condemned what it called a 'hostile Iranian attack' targeting a vessel affiliated with ADNOC, and described Iran's actions as acts of piracy by the Revolutionary Guard Corps. ADNOC had confirmed that one of its vessels was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on August 14.
The UAE will defend its rights to freedom of navigation in the strait, according to presidential adviser Anwar Gargash, who said the Gulf state would pursue a balanced and prudent policy based on deterrence, diplomacy, and adherence to international law. The announcement came after the UAE accused Iran of attacking two vessels linked to ADNOC as they passed through the strait.
Tehran has imposed an effective blockade of the strait since July 12, in retaliation for US strikes following an attack by Iranian forces on a merchant vessel that was abandoned in flames by its crew. The Islamic republic wants to charge users for passage, which Washington fiercely opposes.
