UAE-Iran Rift Sends Oil Prices Soaring Amid Middle East Tensions

Crude oil prices surged on Wednesday after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced it was cutting off all financial and economic ties with Iran. This move deepened concerns about a widening regional conflict in the Middle East.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil trade, remained congested as shipping traffic continued to be sluggish due to unclear signals about its reopening after a wartime blockade.

Brent crude prices reached $91.89 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed to $86.11 per barrel, both marking their highest levels in nearly three weeks.

Dennis Kissler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial, attributed the price increase to the UAE's decision and ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.

Markets remain anxious about potential supply disruptions, particularly with Russia's crude exports from its western ports declining 15% below planned volumes due to issues at the Black Sea terminal of Novorossiysk. Additionally, U.S. government data showed an unexpected increase in crude stockpiles last week.
