Uganda Names Crude Oil Blend 'Pearl Sweet'
Uganda has named its crude oil blend 'Pearl Sweet' in preparation for commercial production, according to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. The name is derived from Uganda's nickname, the 'Pearl of Africa', and reflects the high quality of the oil.
The 'Pearl Sweet' oil blend contains little or no sulfur, making it easier and cheaper to refine than high-sulfur crude. Museveni emphasized that Uganda's oil resources should not be seen as just a commodity for export, but also as an opportunity to establish industries and strengthen the country's productive capacity.
Monica Musenero, minister of energy and mineral development, said that the name carries Uganda's identity into the international petroleum market. The naming ceremony took place at the Kingfisher Oil Development Area in Kikuube District, operated by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
