Uganda Names Crude Oil Blend 'Pearl Sweet' Ahead of Commercial Production
Ugandan authorities have named their country's prospective crude oil blend 'Pearl Sweet', marking a milestone as East Africa gears up for commercial production by the end of the year. The name is derived from Winston Churchill's description of Uganda in the last century as 'the pearl of Africa', with 'sweet' reflecting the crude blend's low sulfur content.
The country has estimated recoverable oil reserves of roughly 1.6 billion barrels, with investors including French oil company TotalEnergies and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) owning significant stakes. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni stated that the 'name combines national identity with a commercial description', supporting future crude marketing activities.
Production is expected to plateau at about 230,000 barrels per day, with blended crude exports emerging from separate projects by CNOOC and TotalEnergies. The naming of the oil blend comes as Uganda prepares for commercial production after facing legal and environmental setbacks since the discovery two decades ago.
