Uganda Names Crude Oil Blend 'Pearl Sweet' Ahead of Commercial Production
Uganda has named its crude oil blend 'Pearl Sweet', ahead of commercial production, President Yoweri Museveni announced. The name was unveiled at the Kingfisher Oil Development Area in Kikuube District, operated by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
The 'sweet' designation comes from the crude's low sulfur content, making it easier and cheaper to refine than high-sulfur oil, according to Museveni.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Monica Musenero said the name 'Pearl Sweet' carries Uganda's identity as the 'Pearl of Africa' into the international petroleum market.'
The naming ceremony coincides with Uganda's preparations for commercial oil production. The country expects to produce 230,000 barrels of oil per day at peak production from the Tilenga and Kingfisher oil projects.
