Uganda has unveiled its crude oil export blend, dubbed 'Pearl Sweet', in preparation for its first oil production. The country's President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, announced the name at a ceremony held at the Kingfisher Development Area.

The chosen name reflects both national identity and commodity information. 'Pearl' represents Uganda's historical title as the 'Pearl of Africa', while 'Sweet' denotes the crude's low sulphur content and medium light characteristics, making it an attractive feedstock for refiners.

The country is expected to reach first oil by late 2026, with production anticipated around November. The benefits of refining at home include supporting the local economy and protecting the environment, as the government has forbidden gas flaring.
