UK Considers Military Support for Saudis in Yemen Conflict
The British government is reportedly considering providing military support to Saudi Arabia in its conflict against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. The move comes after Saudi Arabia asked for diplomatic and military assistance from the UK, citing concerns over the impact of a potential Houthi takeover of the Bab el-Mandeb strait on global oil shipments.
The Houthis have been making gains in recent days, with reports suggesting they now control significant stretches of Yemen's coast near the Red Sea chokepoint. The group has also carried out attacks on key infrastructure, including a drone strike on the East-West Pipeline that carries nearly 4% of global oil supply.
The UK is said to be concerned about the potential economic implications of a Houthi takeover of the strait, with officials warning that it could lead to energy prices soaring in Britain. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reportedly agreed to send British military advisors to Saudi Arabia to support its efforts against the Houthis.
