UK Energy Bills Skyrocket Amid Global Gas Market Volatility
UK energy bills are set to surge in October as Ofgem raises the Energy Price Cap by 4% for the period between October 1 and December 31. This increase is attributed to higher wholesale gas prices due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has driven up global gas markets.
The current price cap for a typical household paying by direct debit for gas and electricity is £1,663, or $2,268. With the new price cap, the average household using both electricity and gas will see their costs rise to £1,723, or $2,350 per year.
Ofgem's decision was widely expected, with Cornwall Insight predicting a 4% increase last week. The UK energy regulator cited volatile global gas markets as the primary driver of price changes.
