UK Food Security Under Siege as Drought and War Disrupt Grain Harvests

The ongoing drought in Europe is exacerbating food security concerns as grain harvests across the continent face significant disruptions. With wheat prices up 30% this year, farmers are struggling to maintain profitability amidst rising costs.

The Ukraine-Russia war has worsened conditions for two of the world's largest grain producers, leading to a shortage of supplies and increased transportation challenges. The low water levels of the Danube River have further complicated the situation by pushing up shipping costs for grain exports from central and eastern Europe.

In addition to the grain shortage, the conflict in the Persian Gulf has restricted exports of natural gas used for fertilizer production, resulting in approximately 35% of global fertiliser supplies being stranded. The UK's reliance on imported fertiliser and ammonia makes it particularly vulnerable to these disruptions.

The EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) is set to take effect in January, imposing a new levy on imports based on greenhouse gas emissions. This move has sparked concerns that farmers may be pushed to the wall by the additional costs, with some threatening to leave their fields fallow rather than produce crops at a loss.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham's £65m drought package for agriculture includes funding for water storage facilities and other measures to alleviate shortages. However, farmers are also calling for the removal of red tape that hinders the installation of reservoirs.
