UK Gas Prices Hit Three-Year High Amid Calls for Clean Energy Transition
Natural gas prices in the UK have reached a three-year high, according to recent data. This surge is being felt by households and businesses across the country, highlighting the need for a shift away from reliance on gas for heating.
Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), warned that this vulnerability to global market fluctuations is not alleviated by increased North Sea drilling. In fact, she notes that around 90% of the North Sea's oil and gas has already been extracted, rendering additional drilling ineffective in lowering prices.
Ralston emphasized that the UK's dependence on foreign imports for gas will only continue to grow unless demand is reduced through a transition to clean power sources. Electric heat pumps are seen as a key solution to this challenge, allowing households to move away from gas heating and gain greater control over their energy costs.
