UK Government Accused of Hypocrisy Over Billion-Dollar LNG Import Plan
The UK government is facing criticism from industry leaders over plans to spend billions of pounds on importing liquefied natural gas (LNG), despite admitting that domestic North Sea production will be needed for decades to come.
The proposal involves chartering a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) and creating a strategic gas storage reserve, which would likely cost billions over 25 years.
Russell Borthwick, chief executive of the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, called out the hypocrisy of efforts to halt new North Sea production while considering importing LNG, which carries more emissions than domestic gas.
Borthwick argued that climate action should begin with reducing reliance on imported energy and that blocking domestic production would only lead to increased imports.
